A holiday starts with a destination. A smooth application starts with knowing which travel visa you need. For UAE residents planning a trip abroad, the right answer depends on your passport, your route and the reason for your visit.
This guide covers outbound travel from the UAE. If you are planning to visit Dubai instead, start with our UAE tourist visa guide.
Do UAE residents need a travel visa?
Start with your passport nationality rather than assuming that living in Dubai determines your visa requirements. Two friends with UAE residence permits may need different entry permissions for the same holiday.
Use the destination’s immigration or embassy website to check your passport, purpose of travel and intended stay. Also check the countries where you will change planes: a connection can have separate transit requirements, particularly if you change airports or pass through immigration.
For the UK, use the official visa checker to identify the relevant permission for your circumstances. Do not assume that a visa, an electronic travel authorisation and visa-free entry are interchangeable.
Travel visa document checklist for UAE residents
Use the list below to organise your file. It is a preparation checklist, not a substitute for the documents requested by your destination. Some items may not apply to your visa category.
- Passport: check the destination’s validity, issue-date and blank-page rules; prepare copies if requested.
- UAE residence evidence: gather your residence permit and Emirates ID where required. Check any destination-specific residence validity condition.
- Application form and photograph: follow the current form, photo specifications and signature instructions.
- Employment, business or sponsorship evidence: prepare the relevant employer letter, business documents or sponsor information when requested.
- Financial evidence: follow the specified statement period and document format. Make sure the funding explanation matches your circumstances.
- Travel purpose and itinerary: show a realistic plan with consistent arrival, departure and accommodation details.
- Insurance: arrange the cover required for your visa and destination.
- Additional documents: check requirements for children, hosted visits, translations and other personal circumstances.
Create one folder for each traveller. A simple file index makes it easier to notice a missing document before an appointment. Keep original information accurate; do not alter evidence to make an application appear stronger.
How to apply for a travel visa from Dubai
- Confirm the trip. Decide your destination, dates, purpose and who will travel. Check each traveller’s eligibility separately.
- Choose the correct application route. Follow the embassy or immigration website to the official portal or authorised application provider.
- Build the file. Read the checklist before completing the form, then compare names, dates and passport details across your evidence.
- Complete the required submission. Follow instructions for payment, appointments, biometrics or document upload. Keep receipts and application references.
- Track the decision. Use the official tracking method and respond to document requests through the specified channel.
- Check the issued permission. Review your name, validity, permitted stay, entries and any conditions before finalising your journey.
For example, if your approved leave and accommodation cover different dates, resolve the mismatch before submission. A consistent itinerary should explain your real travel plans clearly.
How early should you apply, and what does it cost?
Allow time for gathering documents, finding an appointment and receiving a decision. Appointment waiting time is separate from processing time. Use the current official guidance for your visa category rather than relying on a friend’s previous experience.
Schengen travel from the UAE
Schengen short-stay applications generally must be submitted at least 15 days before travel and no earlier than six months beforehand. Normal processing is 15 days, but it can extend to 45 days. For a multi-country trip, apply to the country of your longest stay; if stays are equal, use the first country visited. Check the European Commission’s application guidance and your consulate’s checklist.

UK visitor travel from the UAE
For applicants who need a UK Standard Visitor visa, the earliest application date is three months before travel. GOV.UK says decisions are usually made within three weeks after the online application, identity verification and document submission are complete. A passport must be valid throughout the visit. Check the official Standard Visitor application page for the current process, fee and timing.
Ask for a clear cost breakdown
Separate the government visa fee from application-centre charges, optional services, insurance, translations and agency assistance. Ask which charges are refundable before paying. There is no single travel visa price for all UAE residents or destinations.
Common visa preparation mistakes to avoid
- Following a generic social-media checklist: confirm the rules for your passport and visa category.
- Using inconsistent information: compare travel dates, accommodation and funding details before submission.
- Leaving transit checks until departure: review every connection while planning the route.
- Paying without checking booking terms: understand what you can cancel or change if plans move.
- Assuming a well-prepared file guarantees approval: the authority assesses each application.
For UK applications, financial evidence should explain the funds available and their source. The official guidance also sets out translation requirements and reminds applicants that supporting documents do not guarantee a successful application. See the UK visitor supporting-document guide.

Travel visa FAQs for UAE residents
Do UAE residents need a travel visa for every country?
No. Entry requirements depend on your passport nationality, destination, travel purpose and sometimes your residence status. Check the destination’s official eligibility rules before booking.
Is an Emirates ID enough to travel abroad?
An Emirates ID does not replace your passport or any visa or travel authorisation required by your destination. Check the complete entry requirements for your journey.
How much bank balance is required for a tourist visa?
There is no single bank balance requirement covering every destination. Follow the official financial evidence rules for your visa category and provide a clear, truthful explanation of how your trip will be funded.
Should I book flights before my visa is approved?
Check what the application actually requires before purchasing tickets. A reservation or itinerary may be requested. Where possible, choose flexible arrangements and understand the cancellation terms.
Can Amigo Travel guarantee visa approval?
No. The relevant embassy, consulate or immigration authority decides the outcome. Amigo can help with preparation and available application support, but cannot guarantee approval or appointment availability.
